How to read it
- The bright curve is what the microphone hears right now. When a note stops, each frequency falls back at the Decay speed, so you can watch the sound die away.
- The pale blue silhouette behind it is the peak hold: the loudest level each frequency has reached since the last reset. Play a note once and compare how much of that maximum each harmonic keeps over time.
- Hover or tap a peak to see its frequency, nearest note, and dashed guides at 2×, 3×, 4×… that frequency. Real overtones sitting slightly above the guides reveal inharmonicity, which is typical of stiff piano strings.
- The sustain history below scrolls downward over the last 12 seconds. Long vertical streaks are frequencies the instrument holds; short ones die quickly. Dead spots and wolf notes stand out as streaks that fade abnormally fast or pulse.
- Full range shows everything the microphone captures, up to half its sample rate, with the infrasound and ultrasound bands shaded. Audible only zooms in on 20 Hz – 20 kHz.
